Since lockdown began and self isolation started, I’ve really been missing my work and meeting clients but I’m also very grateful for this time, as it’s forcing me to think outside the box and get creative. I’ve seen online photographers doing virtual shoots and thought I’d give it a go myself.
I had so much fun directing and taking pictures and it was so brilliant to catch up with my best friends (WHO I MISS SO DAMN MUCH BUT WANT TO KEEP THEM SAFE SO ARE FOLLOWING LOCKDOWN RULES LIKE A SENSIBLE HUMAN *sobs*)
I thought I’d share how I did my virtual photo shoot so you all can have fun and stay creative too.
What you’ll need:
a friend or two (two is best to help move the phone around)
you and your friend/client to both have access to FaceTime
some killer outfits
lots of good natural light
a plant always helps
Call each other and take a few test shots using the white button on the left bottom of the screen (see below). Don’t screenshot because the quality will be compromised.
These will get saved to your photo album on your phone. (Double check before you take loads that they’re actually saving)
Ask your pal to move around the room / space to find the best light. Harsh light on an iPhone actually doesn’t look too bad and works a little better than shadow.
It’s best to have two people, one to follow your instructions and move the phone around.
Now get directing! Try different angles and don’t be afraid to admit when something doesn’t work (I do this ALL the time and I actually feel so much better for it, because I can learn from my mistakes). Take loads of pictures and have fun. That’s the most important part right now. TOP TIP Use a teddy to show the person holding the camera, the angle you're going after. See FaceTime screenshot at the top of the page.
AirDrop or move them from your phone to your computer or alternatively, edit them on Lightroom on your phone. I personally prefer to edit on my laptop as I find it much quicker and easier but do what’s right for you.
Apply your presets (hey, did you know I’m like totally selling my presets in the online shop? Check it out if you feel like it...) and adjustments and Bob’s your Auntie.
Here’s some images I took today:
Now it’s your turn. Have fun! If you'd like to see more, head over to my Instagram and why not follow along for some more experiments and updates. All my love and kindness, Han xxxxx
